Splurge-Worthy Countertops – Top kitchen
According to the 2022 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, kitchen countertops remain the most popular feature to upgrade during a kitchen remodel, with 91% of homeowners opting to do so.
Additionally, 35% of homeowners reported splurging on their countertop choice, spending more than they had originally planned. While engineered quartz continues to be the most popular material for kitchen counters, its popularity has declined by 9% from the previous year’s survey.
In contrast, natural stone quartzite has gained 2% points in 2022.
Kitchen Islands Lengthening in Recent Trends
As per the 2022 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, homeowners are increasingly opting for larger kitchen islands, with nearly 40% of them being more than 7 feet long.
This trend is likely driven by the need for extra space to cook and bake, but it’s also being used for other purposes, such as working from home. In fact, 20% of homeowners reported using their kitchen island as a workspace.
With the added space, homeowners are also taking advantage of the space below the counter, using it for extra storage capacity. In particular, 78% of homeowners added cabinets with closed doors to their kitchen islands, allowing for more organized storage solutions.
This trend towards larger kitchen islands and increased storage capacity is likely a response to the growing importance of the kitchen as a multifunctional space. As more people spend time working and socializing in their kitchens, having a larger island and more storage space is becoming increasingly necessary.

Open-Concept Kitchens Lose Popularity According to Houzz Survey Results
According to the 2022 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, there has been a shift in preference away from open-concept floor plans.
Some home decor experts have been predicting that the open-concept floor plan trend would eventually lose its appeal, and it seems that prediction is coming true. The 2022 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study reflects this shift in preference, with only 38% of homeowners opting to open up their kitchens to other rooms, compared to 46% in 2020.
Many families are now seeking more privacy and wish they had one more wall or door, and this desire for a little more seclusion is becoming more prevalent in kitchen design. The trend marks a departure from the popular open-concept floor plans of recent years, as many homeowners are finding value in the privacy and functionality that walls and doors can provide.
The study’s findings suggest that more and more people are recognizing the benefits of closed-off kitchen spaces that provide a designated area for cooking and socializing, separate from other areas of the home.
