How to build laundry room shelves
Choosing the perfect shelf style for your laundry room depends on the layout of the space.
If you have an alcove or closet where your washer and dryer are located side by side, building extra-deep floating shelves is a straightforward option. However, if your appliances are against a standard wall, it can be more challenging.
Don’t worry, though, we have a workaround solution for you.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to build laundry room shelves:
Step 1: Measure the space: Determine the width and depth of your desired shelves based on the dimensions of your laundry room.
Step 2: Cut wood: Using pine boards, cut two longer boards to fit the width of the space and several shorter boards to act as internal frame supports.
Step 3: Build the shelf frame: Lay one longer board on your work surface and attach the shorter boards perpendicular to it, creating a frame using wood screws.
Step 4: Prep the wall: Use a stud-finder to locate the studs on the back wall and side walls.
Mark each stud and establish a level line at the desired shelf height.
Step 5: Mount the frame: Lift the frame and screw it into the wall, securing it to the studs.
Adjust the side boards to ensure they are level and secure them to the wall studs as well.
Step 7: Cut and mount plywood: Cut plywood to fit the dimensions of the shelf frame and attach it to the top and underside of the frame using wood glue and nails.
Step 8: Cut and mount the front board: Attach a front board to cover the frame and edges of the plywood using glue and nails.
Step 9: Sand the boards: Sand the shelves to remove any rough edges and prepare them for finishing.
Step 10: Build additional shelves: Repeat the process to build as many shelves as needed for your laundry room.
Step 11: Finish the shelves: Paint the shelves to match the wall color or apply a stain for a natural look.
Use a pre-stain wood conditioner before staining to ensure even absorption.
Build Shelves on Standard Walls
For standard walls without alcoves or closets, it’s not recommended to build floating shelves without side support.
Instead, opt for standard shelf boards with brackets for better stability. If you prefer the look of floating shelves, you can purchase prefabricated metal floating shelf hardware and adjust the shelf depth accordingly.
By following these steps, you can create functional and stylish shelves that will help declutter your laundry room and provide efficient storage for your needs.
